Assisted Living Facility to be Constructed in York County

Virginia Health Services has announced plans to construct an assisted living community in Yorktown.

According to a press release, the community will be named the Hamilton and will feature 40 apartments, which will house to 60 residents inside a 41,000 square-feet facility.  The Hamilton will be constructed on the same campus as the York Convalescence and Rehabilitation Center, which VHS also operates. The campus is located on Battle Road, just off Route 17.

“After we built our first assisted living facility, the Huntington at the Newport in Newport News, we learned two things. One, Virginia Health Services is very well-suited to manage and operate assisted living facilities and two, if you build a high-quality product such as ours, there is a great deal of demand,” VHS Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey L. Mendelsohn said.

“We rarely have vacancies for more than a few days at The Huntington. Consequently, we expect the level of demand in the York County area will also be high at the Hamilton,” he added.

A formal dining room will offer residents fine dining three times a day, and a private dining room will be available for family gatherings.  The Hamilton will offer residents Wi-Fi, a library, a beauty parlor, an activity room, and a media center, as well as transportation to offsite appointments.  The third floor will feature a glassed-in “Florida room,” and residents and their guests can picnic at the outdoor courtyard.

“The community will be very pleased with the concept that we have created,” Mendelsohn said.

Healthcare will be provided around the clock by licensed practical nurses and medication administration.  Every apartment will include an emergency response system for residents who require immediate medical attention.

The Hamilton is being constructed by PMA Architecture and will cost approximately $8.5 million.  According to Katie Stodghill, AIA, principal with PMA, “we have gone to great lengths to design the apartments and the open-spaces with a luxurious feel while maintaining the coziness of home.”
