Fall Conference Recap: VML and VACo

PMA Architecture had a busy fall season exhibiting at annual conferences for the Virginia Municipal League (VML) and the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo). At PMA, we believe it’s the people and our relationships to their goals that give us our opportunities and provide a path to accomplishment. Our long-standing relationships with VML and VACo continue to provide a forum for us to forge and develop a deeper relationship with the leaders in Virginia’s Counties, Towns and Cities. Through these relationships, we build a foundation of understanding that allows our designers and preservationists to plan for the future of Virginia communities while honoring and preserving the heritage in the Commonwealth.

Kicking off the fall conference season was the Virginia Municipal League 2022 Annual Conference. PMA principals Jeff and Katie Stodghill and Marketing and Communications Specialist Sara Garvin attended the conference, held October 2 – 4, 2022 at the Downtown Richmond Marriot. VML was founded in 1905 and originally called the League of Virginia Municipalities. VML is focused on improving local governments at the town and city level. According to their website, “its primary mission throughout its history has been to serve as a legislative advocate for Virginia localities.” PMA enjoyed catching up with friends and clients at the three-day event, including Josh Farrar, Town Manager for the Town of Ashland. PMA recently worked with Josh and VML’s Director of Communications, Rob Bullington, on a podcast and an article for VML’s Town & City magazine. The podcast and article will share the story of the new Ashland Town Hall which was designed by PMA. Both will be released in December.

PMA closed out the fall conference season with the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) 88th Annual Conference, held November 13-15, 2022 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. PMA is one of the longest-running VACo Associate Members and was a Diamond Sponsor for the Annual Conference Banquet in the Marriott Grand Ballroom. PMA staff designed a custom label for wine bottles, placed on each table, that featured stylized art depicting the façade of the firm’s historic Hilton Village studio. VACo was founded in 1930, one year after the Great Depression, by six southwestern counties in Virginia, “for the purpose of improving county government and the general welfare of people.” Almost 100 years later, VACo has grown to represent 95 counties across the state of Virginia.

For more than 35 years, PMA has maintained a relationship with both VML and VACo. We thoroughly enjoy meeting with former and current clients, local government leaders, industry partners, and friends from various towns, cities, and counties across the Commonwealth as we continue to build our knowledge about service to Virginia communities.
